After five years and many meetings with residents, Councillors and stakeholders across the District, a truly cross-party local plan for the future of Warwick and Stratford District shas been developed.
I am so proud of what Labour has achieved with this plan.
Currently, for every one bed of social housing we advertise, 140 people apply. We simply do not have enough housing in this area to support local people, and many have sadly left our district due to being priced out. With this plan, we have found a path to building new homes that will provide for everyone. As well as bringing new affordable and social housing to the area, this plan will also bring huge amounts of infrastructure funding to Warwick District, including:
- 9 new primary schools
- 9 new neighbourhood centres
- 4 new bridges
- New cycleways
- Rail investment
- New sports facilities
- Water infrastructure investment
Our only surprise is that, after spending five years helping to develop this local plan alongside Labour and the other members of a cross-party advisory group, all 10 Lib Dem Councillors in Warwick District voted against it, while the Stratford District Lib Dems voted for it. By voting against the local plan last Wednesday, instead of a carefully thought out plan that will bring new funding and investment, the Lib Dem Councillors in Warwick District voted for uncontrolled housing, no new infrastructure in the area, and blanket approval for any new housing proposed by the central government.
Looking to the future, this local plan will likely be the last major decision that Warwick District Council makes. Over the next couple of years, we will begin the process of unifying with Stratford District Council and the southern half of Warwickshire into one unitary authority.
Labour is proud to have set Warwick District’s future on the path to success, and look forward to working with all parties to make sure we create the best Council possible for the residents of Warwick, Leamington, Stratford, Kenilworth, Whitnash, Bishop’s Tachbrook, and all the villages of South Warwickshire.
