Stef Parkins, Warwick and Leamington Labour Party Chair says:
“We want to do all we can to support our residents who are feeling fearful following the violence and disorder that has affected many areas over the last few days. We know the vast majority of residents will have been appalled by the behaviour we have seen – these violent thugs do not represent anyone but themselves, and certainly not the decent people of your area. Our council leaders, councillors and MP have been contacting community groups to offer any support we can and stand together with our black and brown communities.
“I would also want to repeat the Prime Minister’s words – ‘be in no doubt – those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law’.”
Warwick District Council Labour Leader, Cllr Jessica Harrison, said: “We have committed to do as much as we can to support marginalised communities who are the target of these protests. As Labour we have a commitment to addressing structural inequalities and promoting racial equality through both policy and community engagement.
“Warwick District has welcomed refugees providing substantial support through community initiatives, charitable organisations, and government programs, making this area a place where refugees can rebuild their lives.”
Warwickshire County Council Labour Leader, Cllr Sarah Feeney, said: “All residents of Warwickshire deserve to be treated with respect and decency and no resident should be afraid of leaving his or her home. There is space to debate any issue, but there is never room for violence. These riots are not political protests, they are attacks on vulnerable people and the police who are seeking to protect them by a small number of hooligans intent on causing destruction.”
Warwick Labour Town Council Leader, Cllr Dave Skinner, said: “Warwick is a fabulous community that has many diverse groups that come together as one. I would not like to think anyone is fearful where they live, where they worship or where they work. Warwick is a community for all and we will do all in our power for everyone to feel safe and part of that community.”
Leamington Town Council Leader, Judith Clarke, said: ““Warwick District, which includes Leamington, has benefited from an ethnically diverse community, with local industry attracting highly skilled employees from across the world. The diversity is also visible in the range of restaurants, cultural events, and community organizations, contributing to a rich cultural tapestry and the economic success of the area.”
