Cycling Proposal on Newbold Comyn
We know that many residents in Willes, Clarendon and across Leamington are concerned about the planning application for new cycling facilities on Newbold Comyn. They question:
- why the proposed tracks will be so much more extensive than in the original Master Plan which was broadly approved during the consultation?
- whether they will scar the landscape and attract thrill-seeking racing & mountain-bikers from far afield, to the detriment of the amenity, not least in adding to traffic and parking pressures?
- why any consideration should be given to the many supportive comments on the application from people living outside the District when this is a District facility and should not be a regional or national destination
- how far this will affect the balance with other planned uses of the Comyn for walking, woodland and wildlife?
- how safe the area will be for walkers and animals, especially at places where cycle tracks cross paths?
- the duplication of the visitor centre café facility at the proposed cycle hub and whether they could both be viable?
Labour Councillor Geraldine Cullinan will be speaking at the Planning Committee to raise these questions and oppose the plans being approved before their potential impacts and alternative options to mitigate those can be assessed.
A new appreciation of the Comyn has arisen during the COVID19 epidemic and we believe that too needs to be weighed in the balance. We expect all Councillors on the Committee will wish to scrutinise this application with special care, given the strength of public feeling and the valid concerns being raised. We have heard from some residents that are interested in the plans going forward, so it is vital that a balance is struck between the proposals and the current use of the Comyn that we all know and love. Labour is engaging with local residents to find that balance.
We favour a pause in the process so that potential impacts, and possible options, can be fully assessed and shared with residents.
